Florida football fans are frustrated after former quarterback Anthony Richardson made some harsh remarks about the program during the 2024 offseason. Since Dan Mullen’s second-to-last season in Gainesville, the Gators have struggled, with Mullen being fired 11 games into the 2021 season after a disappointing 5-6 record. Florida has not had a winning season since Mullen’s departure, facing issues with offensive production, defensive struggles, and underperformance in high-profile games. Despite these challenges, Richardson, who played for Florida from 2020 to 2022, was drafted as the fourth overall pick in the NFL after his time with the Gators.
Richardson played under Mullen for two seasons before becoming the starting quarterback in 2022 under current head coach Billy Napier. However, in a recent interview, Richardson revealed that he almost left Florida before Mullen’s departure. More surprisingly, he admitted that regardless of his draft prospects, he had planned to leave Florida after his third season. These comments did not sit well with Gator fans, who expressed their displeasure on social media.
Earlier this week, a podcast clip of Richardson resurfaced and went viral, where he criticized former head coach Dan Mullen’s management, citing poor oversight and injuries that made him consider leaving after his second season. Though he stayed on after Napier took over, Richardson said he had no intention of remaining at Florida after the 2022 season, whether he declared for the draft or entered the transfer portal.
Richardson’s comments have angered Florida fans, especially given the team’s struggles during his tenure. The Gator faithful took to Twitter (X) to voice their disapproval. As Richardson prepares for his second NFL season with the Indianapolis Colts, he reflected on his time at Florida, revealing that he nearly left the program twice.
During the podcast, Richardson discussed his struggles with injuries and dissatisfaction at Florida, sharing that after a difficult season, he had decided he wouldn’t return to the program.
