The Florida Gators’ offensive strategy faces a significant challenge as star running back. undergoes knee surgery, potentially impacting the team’s game plan for their season opener against Miami. Johnson, a crucial part of the Gators’ offense, recently had a minor arthroscopic procedure, and his recovery is being monitored on a “week-to-week” basis by the coaching staff. With over 2,500 career rushing yards and consecutive seasons surpassing 800 yards, Johnson’s absence is notable, having earned second-team All-SEC honors this year.
As the August 31st season opener against Miami looms, the Gators may need to adapt their strategy.
In Johnson’s absence, sophomore Treyaun Webb is expected to take on the starting role. Webb demonstrated potential last season with 163 rushing yards on 26 attempts, two touchdowns, and four receptions for 18 yards. He expressed readiness for increased responsibility during spring camp, stating, “It’s a big opportunity, I plan on taking full advantage of it.” This readiness is encouraging for the Gators as they face this challenge.
The running back depth chart also features freshmen Kahnen Daniels and Jadan Baugh, who have received praise from running backs coach Jabbar Juluke for their potential. Additionally, veteran Cam Carroll, returning from an ACL injury, might provide experienced depth if fully recovered.
Although Johnson’s absence is concerning, his injury is not considered season-ending. There is hope that he may return for the season opener or shortly after. Meanwhile, this situation allows the younger backs to showcase their abilities and potentially bring new strengths to the Gators’ offense.
