Good News: Yankees Are Set To Announced The Deal Of An Experience Player

The Yankees are one of the teams that have expressed interest in infielder/outfielder Tommy Edman from the Cardinals, reports Katie Woo of The Athletic. The Dodgers have also shown interest in the versatile switch-hitter earlier today.

Edman, 29, has not played in the majors this season due to wrist surgery he underwent last fall. His recovery has been slower than anticipated, and he has only participated in rehab assignments as a designated hitter at the Double-A level. Given his current status, any team interested in acquiring him would need to be confident in his ability to play in the field. Edman’s versatility and strong defensive skills make him an appealing target despite his recent .248/.307/.399 performance in 137 games last year.

The Yankees, who have had below-average production from most positions except those occupied by Juan Soto and Aaron Judge, would benefit from Edman’s capabilities. Although the recent acquisition of Jazz Chisholm Jr. may seem to reduce their need for Edman, there is potential for both players to co-exist in the lineup. Manager Aaron Boone has indicated plans to use Chisholm at third base, a position he hasn’t played in the majors, while Gleyber Torres remains at second base. Edman, with 94 games of experience at third base, could provide a more experienced option and enhance the Yankees’ lineup flexibility.

Adding Edman could also offer the Yankees more options heading into the 2025 season, with several key players potentially becoming free agents. However, acquiring Edman might be challenging as the Cardinals are seeking “cost-controlled major-league starting pitching” in return. Woo suggests that southpaw Nestor Cortes, who has a 4.13 ERA and 3.99 FIP in 22 starts this year, could be a target for St. Louis. It’s uncertain if the Yankees would be willing to trade Cortes or any other starting pitcher, especially with ongoing rumors about acquiring another arm to manage Luis Gil’s innings in the second half of the season.
