Good News: New York Rangers Has Lands The Commitment Of A Star Player

Could the Rangers trade for Carolina’s elite RFA? The New York Rangers have had a relatively quiet offseason, making a few minor moves to improve their roster. However, the anticipated blockbuster move hasn’t happened yet. But it might not be too late for GM Chris Drury to make a significant impact.

If the Rangers are still aiming to bring in a star winger for their first line, they could consider a major trade with the Carolina Hurricanes for Martin Necas. Acquiring Necas would be the big-time addition fans hoped for at the start of the offseason. The 25-year-old is currently a restricted free agent and may be looking to leave Carolina. Although the Hurricanes are reportedly keen on extending Necas, there’s a chance he could be traded instead.

While it’s unlikely that the Hurricanes will trade Necas, if he becomes available, the Rangers should be among the top contenders for him. They haven’t adequately addressed their first-line right wing issue this offseason, and Necas could be the solution.

In 2023, Necas scored 53 points (24 goals and 29 assists) in 77 games. The previous season, he totaled 71 points (28 goals and 43 assists). Necas is an offensive talent who would enhance almost any top-six lineup in the NHL. However, after trading for Necas, the Rangers would need to be ready to pay for their new offensive asset. His new contract could be in the range of $5.5-6 million AAV on a one-year deal, which might be a stretch for the Rangers.

The Rangers are more likely to wait until the trade deadline to make any roster upgrades. Their current lineup remains one of the best in the NHL. While upgrades are always welcome, they are more likely to come as mid-season rentals at the trade deadline rather than a summer blockbuster deal.
