BREAKING: 2 Dallas Mavericks Top Players Are Leaving For Good

Former Mavericks Fan Favorite Explains Departure for Rival in Free Agency

After the Dallas Mavericks’ defeat to the Boston Celtics in the 2024 NBA Finals, key player Derrick Jones Jr. needed a new contract. Jones Jr., who emerged as a crucial factor for the Mavericks during the 2024 Playoffs, chose to leave the team in free agency, signing a three-year, $30 million deal with the LA Clippers.

Jones Jr. started all 22 playoff games for Dallas, averaging 9.1 points per game and providing stellar defense with one block per game. His departure was a disappointment for Mavericks fans, especially since he joined the Clippers, the team Dallas defeated in the opening round of the 2024 Playoffs.

Derrick Jones Jr. Shares His Reasons for Joining the Clippers

Jones Jr. explained that the Clippers’ vision for his role on the team was more appealing. “The route they were wanting to go was towards me and having me come in and fill in that 3-4 role,” he said. “And, be aggressive offensively and be who I am defensively.”

Although Jones Jr.’s departure stings for the Mavericks, the Clippers’ promise of a consistent starting role in the 3-4 defensive position was a significant factor in his decision. Last season, Jones Jr. played 76 regular-season games for Dallas but did not start in 10 of them.

Uncertainty about Paul George’s future with the Clippers before free agency might have also influenced Jones Jr.’s decision. With George now gone, Jones Jr. saw an opportunity for a more prominent role with the Clippers.

Mavericks’ Offseason Moves

Despite losing Jones Jr., the Mavericks have made several acquisitions to strengthen their roster. They traded for Quentin Grimes from the Pistons, signed Naji Marshall to a three-year contract, and completed a sign-and-trade for Klay Thompson. These moves, particularly the addition of Thompson, may have signaled to Jones Jr. that his starting role in Dallas was uncertain, prompting his move to LA.

Marshall, in particular, appears capable of replicating some of Jones Jr.’s defensive intensity, potentially mitigating the impact of his departure.

Looking Ahead

Even with the loss of Jones Jr., the Mavericks are positioned to compete strongly next season. Motivated by their Finals loss, the team will aim for a successful season and may seek to outperform the Clippers, adding a layer of intrigue to their upcoming matchups.
