Three More Georgia Football Players Arrested for Reckless Driving
ATHENS, Ga. – Within 24 hours of a Georgia football player being reprimanded by a judge in Athens-Clarke County for reckless driving, three more Bulldogs have been charged with similar offenses. Senior linebacker Smael Mondon was arrested Wednesday night on charges of racing and reckless driving. Police reported that Mondon was driving a 2022 Dodge Charger on Broad Street near downtown Athens when he was seen racing a gray 2021 Porsche Panamera, driven by freshman defensive back Demello Jones. Jones was also charged with racing on streets/highways but was not jailed as he cooperated with police. Mondon claimed he did not know the driver of the Porsche, according to the police report obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
A day earlier, redshirt freshman offensive lineman Bo Hughley was arrested by UGA police and charged with reckless driving and failure to maintain lane/improper driving. In between their arrests, running back Trevor Etienne appeared in municipal court on DUI and reckless-driving charges. While the DUI charges were dropped, Etienne pleaded no contest to the reckless-driving charge and guilty to underage possession of alcohol and two other driving offenses. Judge Marcy Jolles told Etienne during the hearing, “You are a public figure, whether you realize that or not. What you do, people see because of your role at the university. I would hope that you make better choices in the future to set a better example for those who are watching.”
Additionally, freshman Sacovie White faces charges from a May incident where police allege he was driving recklessly the wrong way on a downtown Athens street. These latest charges bring the total number of driving-related offenses involving Georgia football players to 19 since a high-speed, alcohol-related accident on January 15, 2023, that resulted in the deaths of offensive lineman Devin Willock and recruiting analyst Chandler LeCroy. In that incident, current NFL player Jalen Carter was cited for racing.
