The New York Yankees have reportedly explored a major trade for an intriguing All-Star batter. Rumors around the MLB trade deadline have linked the Yankees to various players to address needs in their bullpen and corner infield. Recent reports now indicate that New York is seeking another significant roster upgrade.
Even before Anthony Rizzo’s injury, the Yankees were in the market for a corner infielder. With DJ LeMahieu’s ability to play first base, the team could also consider a third baseman, but the focus has been on acquiring a power-hitting first baseman.
In addition to corner infielders, the Yankees are also targeting relief pitchers with high strikeout rates and good command. Despite having one of the most effective bullpens statistically, recent performance issues have made this a priority.
One top option is Miami Marlins closer Tanner Scott, who is on an expiring contract and would add another high-end lefty to the bullpen. However, Scott isn’t the only Marlins player the Yankees are interested in. According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Yankees have discussed trading for All-Star outfielder Jazz Chisholm Jr., with plans to play him in the infield. The Seattle Mariners are also reportedly interested in Chisholm Jr.
After trading All-Star second baseman Luis Arraez to the San Diego Padres, the Marlins are expected to trade Chisholm Jr. Though he isn’t having his best season at the plate, his versatility and skill set make him attractive to other teams. This season, Chisholm Jr. has a .255/.324/.419 slash line with a .743 OPS, 12 home runs, 42 RBIs, and 18 steals.
Chisholm Jr. has been inconsistent this season, with varying performance across months. He offers versatility in the field, having played center field this year but previously playing shortstop and second base. He is under contract through 2026 with a $2.63 million salary this season.
