Duke Men’s Basketball Guard Jared McCain Drafted 16th by the Philadelphia 76ers
Duke’s first player in the 2024 NBA Draft is off the board. Jared McCain was selected 16th overall by the Philadelphia 76ers. The one-and-done freshman had an impressive season, starting all 36 games and showcasing standout performances during Duke’s Elite Eight run, including two 30-plus point games in March Madness. He set a freshman record by hitting eight three-pointers against James Madison in the Round of 32.
McCain averaged 14.3 points and five rebounds per game, despite being 6-foot-3. He recorded four double-doubles, showing his ability to grab rebounds. The Sacramento native maintained consistent effort regardless of his scoring output.
McCain initially took time to adjust to college basketball but steadily improved, maintaining high confidence. He stepped up significantly when Duke’s backcourt faced injuries, including a career-high 35 points against Florida State in Tyrese Proctor’s absence, tying Zion Williamson’s freshman scoring record at Duke. This performance highlighted his ability to break down defenses beyond just catch-and-shoot scenarios.
McCain’s mindfulness and meditation practices are expected to help him handle the demands of the NBA season. With a lethal jumper and relentless intensity, McCain aims to boost the 76ers’ backcourt alongside Tyrese Maxey and help Philadelphia progress beyond the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
