Top Remaining Transfer Coleman Hawkins Picks Kansas State

Jerome Tang and Kansas State made a significant addition to their team on Friday by securing Illinois forward Coleman Hawkins from the transfer portal. This move bolsters the Wildcats’ 2024 recruiting efforts, with Hawkins set to play his final season of college basketball for Kansas State.

Ranked as the No. 21 overall player in the transfer portal, the 6-foot-10 forward was highly sought after, with Kansas State competing against LSU and SMU for his commitment. However, after hosting Hawkins for an official visit last weekend, Tang and his coaching staff were able to build a strong relationship with him and meet all his requirements. Hawkins, known for his versatility and ability to initiate offense from the high post, wanted to play a role that involved ball-handling and decision-making. According to sources close to 247Sports, Tang’s vision for Hawkins aligned perfectly, offering him the freedom to shoot jumpers and ensuring he wouldn’t be confined to the low post.

Last season, Hawkins earned third-team All-Big Ten honors at Illinois, averaging 12.1 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game, while shooting nearly 37% from three-point range.

Hawkins’ commitment completes a robust transfer portal effort by Tang and his staff. They previously secured Michigan point guard Dug McDaniel, Kentucky’s elite rim protector Ugonna Onyenso, Samford’s athletic big man Achor Achor, and Villanova’s sharpshooter Brendan Hausen. Additionally, Baye Fall, Max Jones, and C.J. Jones will provide added depth to the roster.
