Elite 2025 Prospect Kate Sears Commits to Virginia Tech

Sears expressed her enthusiasm about her decision to 247Sports, stating, “I chose Virginia Tech because it felt right when I visited. I wanted to go somewhere different from my hometown, but also where I could win and have a strong basketball fan base. Even though the staff is new, they are proven winners. I believe we will make it to the Final Four soon, which is very important to me.”
Sears also considered the distance and people when making her choice. “Many schools I was considering were a flight away, like Kansas, Purdue, and Michigan. I didn’t want to be far from my family, but I also wanted to be around great people. I built a strong relationship with Coach Duffy, and I know the staff will push me to excel both on and off the court.”
Virginia Tech’s new head coach, Megan Duffy, who was hired in April, has already made a significant impact by securing Sears’ commitment. Sears was impressed by Duffy’s success at Marquette, where the team reached the NCAA tournament last season.
“Coach Duffy recruited me throughout the entire process, starting at Marquette. Now that she’s at Virginia Tech, I know she’s a winner, which she proved during her time at Marquette. The excellent resources and fan base at Virginia Tech also influenced my decision. I believe we have everything needed to win, and I trust that Coach Duffy will lead us back on track.”
Sears is excited about the opportunity to play both on and off the ball, emphasizing her versatility. “They see me as a point guard and a shooting guard. I can play either position, which is important to me. I’ve mostly played on the ball, but I know I can also excel off the ball and shoot. The team uses a lot of ball screens and allows guards the freedom to play naturally, not robotically.”
Virginia Tech finished the last season with a 25-8 record and reached the second round of the NCAA tournament. Now part of the program, Sears is eager to develop as a player and contribute to the team’s success.
“I know the coaches will push me to reach my full potential both on and off the court,” she said. “I will work hard to be the best player I can be and help translate that into wins. My goals are to win the conference and make a deep run in the tournament.”
