Saints GM Gives Surprising Update on Trading Pro Bowler
Saints GM Dennis Allen recently provided an unexpected update on the potential trade of Pro Bowler Marshon Lattimore this offseason. Despite ongoing trade rumors, Allen reassured that Lattimore is expected to rejoin the team. Allen mentioned that he had a positive conversation with Lattimore regarding the trade speculation, which suggests that Lattimore might stay with the Saints.
“I felt it was necessary to address the trade talk,” Allen said. “There’s been a lot of external chatter about potential trades. I thought it was the right time to discuss it with him. It was a constructive conversation, and we look forward to having him back on the field.”
While it appears that Lattimore will remain with the Saints, his absence from OTAs could become a bigger issue if it extends into mandatory camp. Lattimore is currently the sixth-highest-paid cornerback in the league, following his 2021 contract extension. However, his performance has declined over the past two seasons due to injuries, missing a total of 17 games. This, along with the Saints’ salary cap situation, puts Lattimore in a difficult position. Similar availability concerns have already strained the relationship between Michael Thomas and the Saints, potentially foreshadowing the same for Lattimore.
Potential Trade Destinations for Lattimore
- Baltimore Ravens: Reports earlier this offseason linked the Ravens to Lattimore before the NFL Draft. With a need to strengthen their secondary, Lattimore could be a valuable addition, despite his injury history. The Ravens could use him in a more aggressive role, possibly even as a linebacker.
- Kansas City Chiefs: The Chiefs need to fill a gap in their defense left by L’Jarius Sneed’s trade to the Titans. Lattimore could be a low-risk, cost-effective option. Though not the same player he once was, he could still provide a valuable upgrade.
- Dallas Cowboys: The Cowboys might consider trading for Lattimore, especially given their cap space challenges with impending extensions for Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb. Though a long shot, Lattimore could offer an upgrade in their secondary.
- Carolina Panthers: With contract negotiations stalling with Stephon Gilmore, the Panthers might look to acquire Lattimore, despite the unlikelihood of the Saints trading him to a division rival. The Panthers could use Lattimore to bolster their defense.
- Los Angeles Chargers: The Chargers are focusing on upgrading their offense but need to strengthen their defense. Adding Lattimore could provide the necessary boost, especially as Kristian Fulton and Asante Samuel Jr. may not be long-term solutions.
It’s only a matter of time before Allen provides another update on Lattimore’s situation.
