5 Detroit Lions Players Who Are Next in Line for a Contract Extension

After securing extensions for three key players this offseason, the Detroit Lions are eyeing their next contract renewals. Here’s a look at the players who are next up for a contract extension:

5. S Ifeatu Melifonwu

Melifonwu has dealt with injuries over his first three NFL seasons, but he showed promise when healthy last season. From Week 14 through the Divisional Round of the playoffs, he was Pro Football Focus’ seventh-highest graded safety. Entering the final year of his rookie contract, a full, healthy season could secure his place in Detroit for the foreseeable future.

4. DE Aidan Hutchinson

Hutchinson, a standout since his rookie season, is not eligible for an extension until after the upcoming season. The Lions have a fifth-year option to extend his contract, but like with Sewell, they might not wait to reward him. If he continues his current trajectory, Hutchinson could become one of the highest-paid edge rushers in the league.

3. CB Carlton Davis

After being acquired from the Buccaneers, Davis had his final contract year restructured. A capable man-coverage corner, he fits well with the Lions’ defensive schemes. An in-season extension seems likely if he performs well, and Davis has expressed a desire for a longer stay in Detroit.

2. DT Alim McNeill

McNeill reshaped his physique and had a breakout 2023 season, although a knee injury limited him. With the rising market value for defensive tackles, McNeill could command $15-20 million per year if he continues to excel. If he proves last season was not a fluke, the Lions will likely find a way to keep him.

1. OT Taylor Decker

The longest-tenured Lion, Decker has expressed a strong desire to finish his career in Detroit. Discussions about his extension have already begun. Despite nearing 31, Decker remains a top offensive tackle and forms an elite duo with Penei Sewell. Extending Decker’s contract would also help manage his $19.1 million cap hit for this year, making him a prime candidate for the next extension.
