Virginia Tech Lands Commitment from Duke Guard Jaden Schutt
Virginia Tech, led by coach Mike Young, secured a commitment from Duke guard Jaden Schutt on Saturday.
Schutt becomes the fifth transfer portal commitment for the Hokies this offseason, joining Temple guard Hysier Miller, Cal guard Rodney Brown Jr., Charleston forward Ben Burnham, and VCU forward Toibu Lawal. This brings the total number of additions for Virginia Tech to eight, including three high school talents: guard Ben Hammond and forwards Ryan Jones Jr. and Tyler Johnson.
Standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing 190 pounds, Schutt, a redshirt sophomore, spent two seasons with the Blue Devils. During his freshman year in 2022-23, he appeared in 14 games, averaging 2.1 points and connecting on seven of his 20 attempted 3-pointers. However, his sophomore year was interrupted by a left knee surgery after participating in an exhibition game against UNC Pembroke.
Originally from Yorkville, Illinois, Schutt was highly regarded as a four-star recruit and a top-75 prospect in the class of 2022, receiving offers from numerous schools including Creighton, DePaul, and Florida, among others. Following his decision to enter the transfer portal, several schools, including Butler, Oregon, and Notre Dame, expressed interest in him.
Schutt’s impressive high school career, which included being named the 2022 Gatorade Player of the Year in Illinois, showcased his scoring prowess and shooting ability, leading his team to a state title.
Duke coach Jon Scheyer praised Schutt as a “premier shooter” with a “championship pedigree” upon his signing in November 2021. His sharpshooting skills should complement well with Young’s system at Virginia Tech, which heavily relies on perimeter shooting.
With Schutt’s commitment, Virginia Tech’s roster for the 2024-25 season now stands at 12 scholarship players, leaving one spot open.
