Virginia Tech’s basketball coach, Mike Young, has been active despite facing setbacks. Following the departure of guard Jordan Ivy-Curry, who had committed to the Hokies in March but later transferred, Young swiftly bolstered the team’s 2024 roster by securing the commitment of former top-80 national recruit, Jaden Schutt.
Standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing 180 pounds, Schutt hails from Yorkville, Illinois, and declared his commitment to Virginia Tech on Saturday night after spending two seasons at Duke. Initially ranked as the 78th best player in the 2022 recruiting class, Schutt was part of Jon Scheyer’s inaugural class as Duke’s head coach.
Schutt’s decision to join Virginia Tech followed considerable interest from various schools after he entered the transfer portal on April 15. Opting for Young’s coaching style, which aligns well with his sharpshooting abilities, Schutt is anticipated to thrive. Noted as one of the top shooters in the 2022 recruiting class, Schutt made appearances in 14 games during his freshman year, averaging 2.1 points per game and shooting 35% from beyond the arc in limited opportunities. However, he redshirted the following season due to knee surgery in January.
Among the seven Duke players who entered the transfer portal, Schutt is the third to transfer to another ACC school, joining TJ Power (Virginia) and Christian Reeves (Clemson). He becomes the fifth player to commit to Virginia Tech from the portal, alongside Ben Burnham, Toibu Lawal, Rodney Brown, and Hysier Miller. Additionally, the Hokies have three freshmen set to enroll for the upcoming season, including newly committed guard Ben Hammond, with forward Ryan Jones considered the prized recruit of Tech’s 2024 class.
Young’s work in the transfer portal continues, as he still has one more scholarship to fill following Ivy-Curry’s withdrawal of commitment.
In sum, welcome to Virginia Tech, Jaden.
