Florida Basketball: Gators Secure Transfer Alijah Martin from Florida Atlantic

Amidst the abundance of impactful players still navigating the Transfer Portal, Florida made a significant acquisition over the weekend, adding former Florida Atlantic guard Alijah Martin to their roster after his four-year stint with the Owls.

Hailing from Summit, Mississippi, the 6’2 wing initially saw limited action in his freshman year at Florida Atlantic. However, Martin emerged as a full-time starter in his sophomore season, solidifying his position in the Owls’ backcourt over the subsequent three seasons.

Throughout his tenure, Martin consistently delivered, averaging over 13 points per game each season, with notable performances highlighting his sophomore year. Despite a slight dip in his numbers this season, Martin remained a valuable contributor, averaging 13.1 points and 5.9 rebounds per game, albeit with a career-low 34% shooting from beyond the arc.

Following the departure of head coach Dusty May from Florida Atlantic, Martin opted to explore his options, ultimately choosing to stay in close proximity by committing to Florida for his final year of eligibility in the SEC. His arrival addresses a need for the Gators, particularly in the backcourt following the departure of transfer Riley Kugel.

As the Gators’ roster takes shape for the upcoming season, Martin’s veteran presence and scoring prowess add depth and experience to the team, complementing the contributions of other transfers like Sam Alexis and Rueben Chinyelu. Under the leadership of coach Todd Golden, Martin’s addition is expected to elevate the Gators as they aim for success both on and off the court in the upcoming season.
