Broncos Add $15 Million Defensive Lineman on One-Year Deal in Free Agency
The Denver Broncos bolstered their defensive front in the free agency market.
After finishing the 2023 season with a lackluster 25th-ranked run defense grade by Pro Football Focus, the team is gearing up for the 2024 season with familiar faces and a new addition.
According to Aric DiLalla of DenverBroncos.com, the Broncos secured unrestricted free agent defensive lineman Angelo Blackson to a one-year contract. Blackson, a nine-year veteran with 128 games and 42 starts under his belt, brings experience to the team. Although he spent last season with the Jacksonville Jaguars, he is now set to join Denver’s defensive line group, which includes Zach Allen and D.J. Jones.
Despite modest sack numbers throughout his career, Blackson remains a valuable asset, providing battle-tested depth and earning commendable grades from Pro Football Focus, including a 53.8 rating for the past season. As he embarks on his 10th NFL season, Blackson’s versatility and special teams contributions are notable.
While specific contract details are yet to be disclosed, Blackson’s previous one-year, $1.2 million deal with Jacksonville indicates a reasonable cap hit for the Broncos. His arrival aligns with the team’s overall approach to the offseason, characterized by subtle moves rather than headline-grabbing splashes, as emphasized by players like Mike McGlinchey.
Despite modest expectations following an 8-9 season, the Broncos remain committed to their strategic approach, aiming for long-term success under Head Coach Sean Payton and General Manager George Paton.
