Sunderland’s anticipated lineup and team updates ahead of their clash against Cardiff City have been revealed. The Black Cats are set to resume action following the international break on Good Friday, traveling to the Cardiff City Stadium.

REVEALED: Which Sunderland players have played the most minutes this season? - Sports Illustrated Sunderland Nation

After a hiatus, Sunderland aims for a fresh start, having not secured a victory since their 3-1 win over Plymouth Argyle last month. Mike Dodds’ squad faces the risk of dropping to as low as 15th place if they suffer a loss in Wales. However, a triumph could narrow the gap between them and Cardiff, currently standing at five points.

While Sunderland may welcome back several players from injury, Jack Clarke’s absence continues to impact their performance, having scored only four goals in their last seven matches. On the other hand, Cardiff has shown decent form, winning four of their last five games but stumbling against rivals Swansea City before the break.

The outcome of Sunderland’s visit to Wales could significantly influence their remaining fixtures. However, Dodds’ selection remains uncertain as they seek to break their winless streak.

Here is the predicted starting lineup:

Sunderland Predicted XI vs. Cardiff:

Anthony Patterson retains his place as the primary goalkeeper for Sunderland this season, with Nathan Bishop’s sole appearance occurring against Crewe in the Carabao Cup back in August. Trai Hume maintains his position on the right side of defense, having showcased consistent performance even during tough times. Dan Ballard, who featured for Northern Ireland during the break, partners with Luke O’Nien in defense. O’Nien returns after a two-match suspension, prompting Leo Hjelde’s shift back to the left side. Callum Styles is dropped to the bench after being deployed out of position for most of his time at Wearside.

In midfield, Dan Neil is a constant presence, while Pierre Ekwah could make his return following confirmation from Mike Dodds that he would be back after the international break. Adil Aouchiche and Chris Rigg vie for the final midfield spot, with Rigg deserving another opportunity considering his potential role in the squad next season.

Abdoullah Ba and Romaine Mundle maintain their positions on the wing, while Jobe Bellingham might be deployed upfront due to Nazariy Rusyn’s injury and Luis Hemir’s poor form.
