Charlton Athletic has received a clear message regarding the future of one of their players who arrived at The Valley last month. Charlton finds themselves in league round-up alongside Portsmouth.
Thierry Small, the 19-year-old defender, has been straightforward about his footballing future. Having signed a short-term contract with Charlton in February, Small is poised to become a free agent at the end of the season. Charlton had stipulated the possibility of extending the deal for another year should Small impress during his time at The Valley. Speaking to London News Online about his aspirations, Small expressed his desire for an extension, stating, “I’m here for everything. If that is what the club wants to do then it is something I wouldn’t be turning down.” He emphasized his current focus on contributing to Charlton’s success this season and continuing the positive momentum into the next.
Originating from Solihull, Small emerged from the academies of West Brom and Everton, earning distinction as Everton’s youngest-ever player under Carlo Ancelotti in the FA Cup debut of 2021. With seven appearances for Charlton so far, Small, despite his youth, presents an exciting prospect for the club.
Meanwhile, Portsmouth’s Liam Vincent, a 20-year-old defender, is poised to depart Fratton Park as a free agent this summer without making a senior appearance for the club. Currently on loan at Tonbridge Angels in the National League, Vincent’s loan spell has been extended until the season’s end due to his impressive performances. Despite not featuring for Portsmouth’s first team, Vincent’s versatility has been valued, leading to the extension of his loan. Portsmouth is reportedly set to release Vincent and ten other youngsters at the conclusion of the League One campaign. Vincent, previously signed from Bromley in 2021 amidst interest from Championship and Premier League clubs, is part of a group expected to be released by the promotion-chasing club.
