Sunderland’s Jewison Bennette is facing a challenging situation with his injury after his loan move to Aris FC in Greece in January. Despite joining the Greek Super League club, the 19-year-old winger hasn’t had the desired impact due to various factors.
Bennette has only managed to make two league appearances for Aris since his arrival, and unfortunately, he has been sidelined for their last three matches due to an injury. Seeking further insights, we consulted Greek football expert Stephen Kountourou to shed light on Bennette’s circumstances abroad.
Regarding Bennette’s performances in his limited outings for Aris, Kountourou remarked that while there were promising signs initially, the young winger struggled to make a significant impression, possibly due to adapting to his new teammates and environment.
As for the extent of Bennette’s injury and his expected return, Kountourou indicated that the injury appears to be complex, possibly involving a muscle tear, which could sideline him for a few weeks or even several months, potentially spanning the remainder of the season.
While there hasn’t been direct commentary from Aris manager Akis Mantzios about Bennette, it’s evident that other players are preferred in Bennette’s position. Players like Alvaro Zamora, Kike Saverio, and Michalis Panagidis are all competing for playing time, making Bennette’s return from injury a challenge for securing a starting spot.
Considering the competitive landscape and Aris’s aspirations for a European place and possibly winning the Greek Cup, Kountourou expressed skepticism about Bennette’s chances of receiving significant game time once he’s available again. With Aris likely to rely on in-form players for crucial matches, Bennette might find himself lower down the pecking order, making regular starts unlikely towards the end of the campaign.
