Charlton Athletic has reached a decision regarding the future of Tariq Fosu, who has been without a club since his release from Brentford last season. Despite initial interest in the winger, the Addicks seem unlikely to extend a contract offer to him. Instead, they appear poised to sign Kazenga LuaLua, a 33-year-old winger, as a free agent under new manager Nathan Jones.
The club’s unbeaten streak in their last seven League One matches has prompted them to seek reinforcements in their forward line to alleviate some of the pressure on top scorer Alfie May, who leads the league with 20 goals this season. While a deal for LuaLua is pending international clearance, Fosu finds himself still in search of potential suitors.
Although Fosu has proven himself as a threat in League One, concerns about his match fitness linger, potentially complicating matters for both Jones and Charlton. Fosu, who has had trials with Charlotte FC in the United States, has not played any competitive matches this season. Despite training with Charlton, there’s no indication that this will lead to a contract offer from the club.
Given the advanced stage of the season and Charlton’s current position, they may view signing Fosu as impractical, especially considering the time it would take for him to regain match fitness. Charlton’s recent improvement under Jones, which has seen them move ten points clear of the relegation zone, adds further weight to their cautious approach.
Fosu’s journey from League One to the Premier League highlights his talent and potential, but injuries have hampered his progress. Despite making a Premier League debut with Brentford, his playing time was limited, and subsequent loan spells at Stoke City and Rotherham United failed to reignite his career.
At 28 years old, Fosu risks facing a full season without a club if he doesn’t secure a deal soon. His lack of match sharpness is a significant concern for Charlton, particularly with crucial fixtures approaching. As safety in the league is not yet assured, the club appears hesitant to take a gamble on their former player.
