Charlton Athletic are on the verge of securing their second free-agent acquisition as they close in on winger Kazenga LuaLua, pending international clearance, according to confirmation from Nathan Jones. Despite their current 15th position in the league, Charlton boasts the top scorer, Alfie May, with an impressive tally of 20 goals this season.
LuaLua, a seasoned 33-year-old player, has previously worked under Jones during their time at Brighton and Hove Albion and Luton Town, notably being part of Jones’ promotion-winning squad in 2019. Having most recently played for Greek side Levadiakos, LuaLua became a free agent in February, having not featured in English football since 2021 due to spells in Greece and Turkey.
His imminent arrival follows the recent signing of striker Connor Wickham, who also joined as a free agent and made his debut in Charlton’s victory over Carlisle United. Jones is optimistic about LuaLua’s potential involvement in their upcoming match against Fleetwood Town, pending clearance.
Speaking ahead of the match, Jones expressed his familiarity with LuaLua’s abilities, highlighting his versatility and athleticism, which he believes will enhance the team’s performance. LuaLua’s addition reflects Jones’ strategy of bringing in experienced players to bolster Charlton Athletic’s progress.
With the team currently sitting 10 points clear of the relegation zone and a blend of young talents like Miles Leaburn, Thierry Small, and Daniel Kanu in the squad, the experienced signings aim to provide guidance and support for the development of the younger players. LuaLua, despite his journey through eight different clubs, seeks stability at Charlton Athletic, hoping to contribute positively to the team’s future.
