According to a report, the Denver Broncos have decided to retain fullback Michael Burton, signing him to another one-year contract. Jason McCourty confirmed the news, stating that Burton agreed to return to the Broncos for the upcoming season.
McCourty noted Burton’s versatility as a fullback and his significant contributions on special teams. Burton, who previously played under Sean Payton in New Orleans, made a notable impact in 2023 with the Broncos, particularly excelling as a lead blocker in Payton’s run-oriented system.
Although Burton narrowly missed out on a Pro Bowl selection last season, he demonstrated his value through consistent performance. In his role, Burton appeared in all 17 games, making three starts and contributing to the team’s offensive and special teams efforts.
While Burton’s statistical contributions may not be flashy, his primary role with the Broncos is as a physical presence, clearing paths for running backs like Javonte Williams, Samaje Perine, and Jaleel McLaughlin to advance downfield.
Originally drafted by the Detroit Lions in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL Draft, Burton has journeyed through multiple teams during his career, a common trend for fullbacks in the league. Despite the challenging nature of his position and the lack of recognition, the Broncos have chosen to extend Burton’s contract for another year, acknowledging his valuable contributions to the team.
