Former Premier League players are currently training with League One side Charlton Athletic, signaling potential new signings as the club experiences a resurgence under manager Nathan Jones. Charlton’s recent success, including an unbeaten run under Jones since his appointment in February, has attracted attention, with speculation arising about the possible recruitment of free agents.
Among those training with Charlton is Kanzenga LuaLua, a former Newcastle United and Brighton winger. LuaLua, known for his stint at Brighton during their Championship years, also had spells at Sunderland and Luton Town before playing for Levadiakos in Greece last season. LuaLua previously worked with Jones at Luton and was part of the squad that won League One in 2019. Discussions were ongoing regarding LuaLua’s contractual situation with Levadiakos, potentially paving the way for a deal with Charlton.
Another familiar face at Charlton’s training ground is Tarique Fosu, released by Brentford in July 2023. Fosu, who had a brief spell with Charlton Athletic earlier in his career, made one Premier League appearance for Brentford and has been without a club since his release.
These developments follow Charlton’s recent signing of Connor Wickham, a former Sunderland and Crystal Palace striker, as a free agent. Wickham’s short-term contract with Charlton emphasizes the club’s proactive approach to bolstering the squad for the remainder of the season.
Manager Nathan Jones, transitioning from a coaching to a managerial role, has indicated his involvement in the club’s recruitment strategy. He emphasized the importance of evolving Charlton’s approach and expressed his readiness to take on broader responsibilities beyond coaching, aligning with the club’s vision for progress.
