A peculiar narrative has emerged involving Houston Texans star C.J. Stroud, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, and Nicole Tepper, the wife of Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper. Schefter made an intriguing revelation on “Pardon My Take,” suggesting that Mrs. Tepper was a fervent admirer of C.J. Stroud leading up to last April’s NFL Draft.
With the Panthers holding the No. 1 overall pick, various options were on the table, including trade possibilities and selecting Stroud, the Ohio State quarterback. However, Carolina ultimately opted for another quarterback, Young, who struggled during his rookie season amidst challenges within the team. This decision left Houston to select Stroud with the No. 2 pick in 2023, a move that proved successful as Stroud led the Texans to a remarkable turnaround, clinching a division title and a playoff berth.
In contrast, the Texans appear astute for transitioning away from the Deshaun Watson era to a promising new chapter. However, the situation in Carolina raises questions. Schefter’s jesting about Mrs. Tepper’s preference for Stroud, coupled with ongoing critiques of the decision to pass on him, adds an uncomfortable element to the story. It begs the question of why Mrs. Tepper’s preferences were considered in organizational decisions and how continuing to question the selection of Young serves the Panthers’ aspirations for success.
