Former New Orleans Saints wide receiver Tre’Quan Smith has secured a new NFL destination by signing with the Detroit Lions, following a brief stint with the Denver Broncos after his release from the Saints’ injured reserve in late September.
According to a report by Mike Klis of 9News in Denver on Wednesday, Smith has inked a futures contract with the Lions after spending most of the 2023 season on the Denver practice squad, where he did not record any catches.
Drafted by the Saints in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft, Smith accumulated 131 receptions for 1,764 yards and 18 touchdowns during his five seasons with the team. His standout performance occurred in 2020, when he hauled in 34 passes for 448 yards and four touchdowns.
Known for his willingness to contribute in the running game with solid blocking, Smith now aims to impress the coaching staff in Detroit, where his former Saints colleague Dan Campbell serves as head coach. Campbell previously held roles as assistant head coach and tight ends coach for the Saints from 2016 to 2020.
