The Broncos are reportedly open to the idea of trading cornerback Patrick Surtain in the 2024 NFL draft to secure a quarterback, according to reports from NBC Sports Chicago. The Chicago Bears face a significant decision this offseason, considering whether to use their No. 1 pick on a quarterback, potentially Caleb Williams from USC, or trade down for future assets while sticking with Justin Fields.
The Broncos, in need of a new signal-caller after the Russell Wilson experiment failed, are said to be eager to make a move. While the franchise is reluctant to part with Surtain, it is considering the cornerback as a trade option only if it proves essential to secure one of the top quarterbacks in the draft.
Broncos head coach Sean Payton is reportedly a strong advocate for Caleb Williams, considering him a generational player with the potential to revolutionize the NFL. Currently holding the No. 12 pick in the draft, the Broncos face a considerable distance from the No. 1 pick, necessitating a substantial offer to move up.
Speculation suggests that a potential trade involving Surtain would likely require multiple first-round picks, Day 2 picks, and possibly more. Surtain, a 23-year-old cornerback selected as the No. 9 pick in the 2021 NFL draft, has already earned two Pro Bowl nods and a first-team All-Pro selection in 2022. Known for his exceptional coverage skills, Surtain boasts seven career interceptions, one pick-six, 36 pass blocks, one forced fumble, and 187 tackles.
The prospect of pairing Surtain with Jaylon Johnson on the opposite end is enticing, especially for a defensive-minded team like the Bears. As the Bears contemplate various trade scenarios in the draft, they are likely to receive offers from multiple teams in need of a quarterback, such as the Washington Commanders, New England Patriots, Atlanta Falcons, and the Broncos themselves.
Ultimately, the Bears’ decision hinges on their assessment of Caleb Williams or other quarterback prospects and whether they believe such a choice would significantly elevate their offense compared to Justin Fields. The front office, led by Ryan Poles, faces a challenging task but will have ample opportunities to explore both the draft and the trade market should they decide to trade down from the No. 1 pick.
