Jason Kelce has addressed the speculations surrounding his retirement in a recent episode of the New Heights podcast. Following the Philadelphia Eagles’ defeat to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday night, there was a growing belief that it might have marked the end of Jason Kelce’s illustrious career as a center bound for the Hall of Fame.
Kelce appeared emotional on the sidelines as the final moments of the game unfolded in Tampa. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Tuesday that Kelce had informed his teammates of his retirement decision and had contemplated retirement after previous seasons. However, the six-time All-Pro offensive lineman contradicted this narrative in his discussion on the New Heights Podcast.
During the podcast, Kelce, speaking to his brother Travis, explained, “I didn’t announce what I was doing on purpose, despite what’s been leaked to the media. But I think there’s a lot of people who can kind of feel the body language and stuff.” He emphasized that making such a decision right after a game like that is not ideal due to the intense emotions and the overwhelming nature of the moment.
Kelce further discussed the retirement rumors, including his post-game conversation with teammates. Reflecting on that emotional moment, he assured that when the time comes for him to officially announce his retirement, it will be done definitively and with respect for the individuals who have meant a lot to him.
Addressing the premature reporting of retirement by Adam Schefter, Kelce expressed that when he decides to retire, he will do it in his own way, a sentiment deserving of respect. Regardless of whether the 36-year-old center decides to retire this offseason or the next, his legacy in Eagles’ football is undeniable. As a sixth-round pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, the Cleveland Heights native has had a remarkable professional career and will be remembered as one of the greatest centers/offensive linemen in football history, leaving an indelible mark on the Philadelphia Eagles.
